Sylans coolers (Glacières de Sylans)

A beautiful visit to ruined industrial buildings near Nantua in the Alps

The Sylans coolers (Glacières de Sylans in French) are ruined industrial buildings located just beside Sylans Lake. Before 1850 it was not possible to create ice industrially. To be able to have ice in summer, it was necessary to store the ice during the winter from the water of the lakes, store it and then ship it by train during the summer months. The Sylans coolers were used for a short period of time from 1864 to 1917. After that date, the creation of industrial ice made their use unnecessary. Visiting the Sylans ice houses is very easy, the place has a lot of charm. If you are in the area, do not hesitate to visit the Sylans coolers.
